How Heat Pumps Work
Heat pumps actually work just like any other central air conditioning system, but with a twist. Central air conditioners use the refrigeration process to cool the home. And while you might assume that this refrigeration process only works for cooling (since you would usually associate the term with cold things) this simply isn’t the case.
Refrigeration is the process of heat removal, as moving heat out of a space is really the only way to cool it down. Refrigeration uses a chemical blend called refrigerant to absorb heat from the air in the home and move it outdoors. That’s why the air around the outside unit of an air conditioner feels so warm. A heat pump just takes this same process and reverses it. As refrigerant circulates to the outside unit, it absorbs heat from the outdoors, and it then moves the heat indoors.
Should You Get a Heat Pump?
Most people have separate AC and heating systems. The heating system is most likely a furnace, which uses natural gas combustion to generate heat, transferring it to the air and blowing it through the ducts. The air conditioner may use the same blower fan, but it’s a completely separate system, with an indoor coil and an outdoor compressor unit that works independently of the air conditioner.
If you’re only looking to replace one or the other, it might not be the right time for a heat pump. But we think that nearly any homeowner can benefit from having this type of system if they are replacing older, inefficient heating and cooling units.
