What’s a Geothermal System?
A geothermal heating and cooling system uses technology that is a lot like what a conventional central air conditioner uses, or more accurately, what a heat pump uses. In a heat pump, refrigerant is used to absorb heat from the inside of the home and to move it outside in the summer. Then, when it’s cold, the refrigerant changes direction and moves heat from the air outdoors to the air inside.
The only problem with this type of system is that the temperature of the air outside is not very reliable. Temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit over the course of a day, causing efficiency to fluctuate as well. And the heat pump becomes less efficient the colder it is outside.
However, if you dig deep enough underground, the temperature is actually relatively stable for most of the day. A geothermal installation takes advantage of this fact. An underground loop system serves as an environmentally sound place to deposit heat in the summer. And in the winter, it uses the earth’s heat to start a thermodynamic reaction that heats the air in the home. This system uses your ducts and your blower fan as well, just like other air conditioning and heating systems. The underground loop installation is the only unusual component, but it should last for decades without trouble.
